BeachBows Defeat No. 7 LBSU To Highlight Day Two Of Big West Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The No. 12 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team remained perfect in the Big West Challenge with a pair of wins, highlighted by a dramatic win over rival and No. 7 Long Beach State Saturday at Hornet Beach on the campus of Sacramento State. The Rainbow Wahine (13-8) rallied past the Beach, 3-2, before dropping CSU Bakersfield, 4-1, to cap the day.

UH, winners of 13 of its last 16 matches, improved to 4-0 in the Big West Challenge and will look to finish undefeated in the three-day tournament with its two final matches of the weekend on Sunday.

After enduring a 2.5-hour weather delay, UH and LBSU faced off in a meeting between conference titans. The contest lived up to its billing with the teams going blow for blow. The teams split the first four courts. UH took courts four and five with wins by the pairs of Sydney Amiatu and Riley Wagoner and Anna Maidment and Sydney Miller. LBSU claimed courts 2 and 3 and it all came down to the top of the order. The match went to a third and deciding set with Jaime Santer and Alana Embry making an epic comeback against Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah to seal the deal. Trailing 14-11, the duo fended off three straight match points and reeled off six of the final seven points overall to clinch a 17-15 set 3 win.

The 'Bows halted LBSU's (17-3) 14-match win streak while also avenging last year's loss to the Beach in the Big West Championship semifinals. It marked UH's eight win over LBSU in the last nine meetings.

The second match of the day saw the 'Bows breeze past CSU Bakersfield (10-12), winning four of five courts. Santer and Embry were victorious once again at the No. 1 court, while the duo of Wagoner and Amiatu won their second match of the day as well with a dominating 21-11, 21-15 straight set win. UH improved to 9-0 all-time versus CSU Bakersfield with all but one of those wins coming on a neutral court.

The Rainbow Wahine wrap up the Big West Challenge matches with two final matches. The day will start with a match versus host Sacramento State at 9:00 am. PT/6:00 a.m. HT, before UH faces No. 9 Cal Poly at 1:00 p.m. PT/10:00 a.m. HT.
