Water Polo Routs Cal State Fullerton in Big West Home Opener

HONOLULU — The third-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened its Big West home schedule with a dominant 20-4 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
 
After their first shot of the match came up just short of a goal, the Rainbow Wahine (14-3, 2-0 Big West) scored on their next nine possessions to trigger the rout of the Titans (9-13, 0-2).
 
UH center Bia Mantellato Dias led the Rainbow Wahine with four goals and Jordan Wedderburn, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, posted her second consecutive hat trick. In all, 11 UH players scored at least one goal and the 'Bows scored at least 20 goals for the second time this season.
 
Emma Gurasich got the start in goal and blocked four shots in three quarters. Madison Greger had two saves in the fourth quarter in her second game appearance of the season.
 
Alba Bonamusa Boix scored the opening goal on a penalty shot 65 seconds into the game and goals by Bernadette Doyle, Lucia Gomez de la Puente and Mantellato Dias followed in quick succession to give UH a 4-0 lead at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter.
 
Bonamusa Boix and Doyle tallied their second goals of the period, Wedderburn scored her first on a backhand shot. Roni Perlman and Mantellato Dias kept the run going and UH took a 9-0 lead into the second quarter.
 
The scoring slowed in the second period and Lot Stertefeld netted the lone goal of the period. Cal State Fullerton broke up the shutout with 3:51 left in the third quarter while UH added five more goals in the third with Mantellato Dias scoring at the buzzer to push UH ahead 16-2.
 
Raha Peiravani scored her second goal of the season and Emilia Schorr posted her third in the fourth quarter and UH improved to 5-0 at the DKAC.

UH continues its four-game homestand on Saturday by taking on No. 25 CSUN at the DKAC. The opening sprint is set for 6 p.m.
