Women's Tennis Comes From Behind to Edge San Jose State

Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (7-6, 4-0 Big West) was down 0-3 at San Jose State before launching an epic rally to win the final four singles matches to stun the Spartans, 4-3. Newly minted Big West Player of the Week Nelly Knezkova clinched the match with a three-set thriller on the No. 1 court to propel the Rainbow Wahine to the win on Wednesday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex. The 'Bows snapped the Spartans five match home win streak and handed them their first home loss of the season.

San Jose State captured the doubles point to start the match. UH's No. 2 duo of Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova led off the match by defeating SJSU's Carolina Millan and Jovan Babic, 6-2. But the Spartans' No. 1 and No. 3 pairs were both victorious to take an early 1-0 lead.

San Jose State kept rolling, winning the first two singles matches to jump to a 3-0 lead. On the No. 4 court, SJSU's Rozalina Youseva defeated UH's Hannah Galindo, 6-0, 6-1 and Duru Durgun downed UH's Anna Kern, 6-1, 6-2.

The Rainbow Wahine then started to turn the tide and began their comeback.

Hawai'i's No. 3 Nikola Homolkova swept Cheuk Ying Shek, 6-3, 6-2. Sheena Masuda held off Jovan Babic at No. 5 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 and UH's No. 2 Ana Vilcek was able to fight off Irena Muradyan in a match ending in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to knot the match at 3-3.

The match was hinged on the No. 1 match with UH's Knezkova and SJSU's Carolina Millan battling back-and-forth. Millan won the first set, but Knezkova evened things at a set apiece. In the third and deciding set, Knezkova broke Millan early and held on to win by a break, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Hawai'i has a quick turnaround as it heads to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the No. 10 California Golden Bears on Thursday, March 21 at 10:00 a.m. HT. Members of the 'Bows' and Bears' faced each other in the season opening tournament hosted by UH in January.
