HONOLULU – Following yet another dazzling effort on the mound, Hawai'i pitcher
Randy Abshier earned Big West Pitcher of the Week recognition for the second time in his career Monday.
Abshier turned in a strong outing Saturday against Rice, matching a career-high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings while holding the Owls to just a run on two hits with only one walk. The senior did not allow a hit over the first 5.1 innings and has now matched a career-high in strikeouts in two of his last three starts.
The San Diego, Calif. native has struck out 31 batters over his last three starts, the most in a three-game stretch by a Rainbow Warrior pitcher since 2017 (Brendan Hornung – 31). Abshier has also fanned at least nine batters in six of his last seven starts at home dating back to last year.
On the season, Abshier has 32 strikeouts to just four walks in 20.0 innings pitched. He's currently second in the Big West in strikeouts and is the only pitcher in the conference to strike out 11 or more batters in multiple games this year.
