Big First Inning Fuels Rout of Rice

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team jumped on Rice from the get-go Sunday, scoring seven times in the first inning on the way to a 12-1 win.

Four Rainbow Warrior pitchers combined to hold the Owls to just one run while scattering 10 hits, finishing with nine strikeouts to just one walk. Nainoa Cardinez earned his first career win, starting and pitching two innings in the declared bullpen day while Isaiah Magdaleno locked down the save by shutting out the Owls over the final four innings with five strikeouts.

The first five Hawai'i batters of the game all reached base to start the first-inning rally and chase Rice starter Ryland Urbanczyk. After a pair of walks and a bunt base hit, the first two runs came in on an error before another came across on a ground out to make it 3-0.

Ben Zeigler-Namoa made it 4-0 after reaching on an RBI infield hit before a Kyson Donahue two-run double and a Jordan Donahue RBI double made it 7-0.

From there the 'Bows pitching staff kept Rice in check as Cardinez and Connor Harrison each went two innings while Zacary Tenn pitched a scoreless fifth inning. Magdaleno entered in the sixth and went the rest of the way to earn his first career save.

Zeigler-Namoa added to the Hawai'i lead in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double before UH added three more in the eighth to cap off the rout.

The Rainbow Warriors again displayed elite plate discipline, working 11 walks to put the team's season total at 116. Each of the top four hitters in the lineup worked at least two walks led by two-hole hitter Austin Machado who drew three free passes. UH came into the weekend third nationally in bases on balls.

The two teams close out their series with a Monday afternoon matchup beginning at 2:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
