Tsukada’s Late Blast Lifts Baseball to Series Win

HONOLULU – Jake Tsukada belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Hawai'i baseball team to a 7-5 win over Rice to clinch the four-game series victory Monday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

After the Owls (5-11) jumped in front with two runs each in the fifth and sixth, the first two 'Bows of the sixth inning worked walks to bring up Tsukada. The senior turned on the first pitch and smacked his first home run as a Rainbow Warrior over the right field wall, putting UH in front 6-4.

Rice cut the Hawai'i lead to one in the top of the seventh, but the 'Bows got it right back in the bottom half. Austin Machado led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch before Stone Miyao dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line for a base hit to plate Machado and give UH a key insurance run.

Danny Veloz worked a scoreless eighth inning before being lifted for Zacary Tenn with a runner on and no outs in the ninth. Tenn induced a 5-4-3 double play on his first pitch before getting a fly out to end the game and earn his first career save.

The Rainbow Warriors (10-6) got the scoring started with a crooked number in the first inning for the second straight day. After UH loaded the bases with one out, Ben Zeigler-Namoa split the gap in left center to plate all three runners with a double to make it 3-0. The two teams went scoreless until the fifth when the Owls scored four unanswered over the next two frames to go in front.

Jordan Donahue moved into the leadoff spot for the first time this year and turned in another big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. The junior is now hitting a team-best .426 on the season with a .533 OBP. Zeigler-Namoa drove in three runs for the second-straight game and reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two walks.

Itsuki Takemoto got the start and retired all six batters he faced while Tyler Dyball also turned in a scoreless outing. Tenn still has not given up a run in his eight appearances, working 8.2 scoreless innings on the year with just three hits allowed.

The Rainbow Warriors head to the mainland for the first time this year to open Big West play at Cal State Bakersfield beginning Friday at 3 p.m. HT.
