HONOLULU – Behind a combined lights-out effort on the mound and steady offense up-and-down the lineup, the Hawai'i baseball team opened up its series against Holy Cross with a dominant 12-1 win Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Four Rainbow Warrior pitchers teamed up to hold the Crusaders scoreless over the first innings, finishing the game allowing just a run on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Offensively, the 'Bows banged out a season-high 14 hits and scored a run in six of their eight innings as five players ended with multiple hits.
After a
Matthew Miura RBI single put the 'Bows on the board in the second, UH struck for four runs in the third to open up a 5-0 lead.
Elijah Ickes drove in the first run of the frame on an RBI single to right center before UH capitalized on some Holy Cross miscues to score three more.
A two-out error extended the inning before a bases-loaded balk scored one more to make it 3-0. Miura then delivered his second RBI single of the game and a passed ball one batter stretched the Hawai'i lead to five.
The 'Bows stretched the lead out further with two runs each in the fifth and sixth to make it 9-0.
Austin Machado delivered a run-scoring double before
Dallas Duarte scored on another passed ball to put UH up seven.
Jordan Donahue then led off the sixth with his first career home run to make it 8-0 and Machado drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.
Harrison Bodendorf turned in his best start of the early season, striking out four over four shutout innings.
Alex Giroux got the win after holding the Crusaders hitless over two innings with three strikeouts before
Tyler Dyball worked three-up, three-down innings in the seventh and eighth.
Donahue led the way offensively, finishing a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Miura, Machado, Ickes and
Ben Zeigler-Namoa all added two-hit games with Machado and Miura each driving in a pair of runs.
The Rainbow Warriors and Crusaders continue their series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. LHP
Randy Abshier (0-1, 7.00) is slated to start for UH while RHP Alex Bryant will start for Holy Cross.
