Late Runs Cost Rainbow Warriors

HONOLULU – After erasing a four-run deficit, the Hawai'i baseball team surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 6-4 loss to Holy Cross Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Rainbow Warriors had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out but came up empty. Holy Cross came back by putting the first two runners of the top of ninth on base before a throwing error on a bunt attempt allowed both to score, making it 6-4.

Crusader closer Jaden Wywoda then set UH down in order in the bottom of the ninth to even up the series.

The Crusaders (3-5) struck for two runs each in the second and fifth innings to put the 'Bows in a hole. Chris Baillargeon got the scoring going with a leadoff homer to start the second inning before another run came in on a ground out.

Holy Cross struck for two more in the fifth inning while Crusader starting pitcher Alex Bryant held the Rainbow Warriors scoreless over his first five innings of work to make it 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

UH (5-5) finally broke through offensively in the sixth with four runs to tie the game. A passed ball allowed the first UH run of the game to score as Elijah Ickes came across after leading off the inning with a single.

Matthew Miura then cut the deficit to one with a two-run triple to score Austin Machado and Dallas Duarte, making it 4-3. Jared Quandt tied it up two batters later on a squeeze bunt to score Miura, knotting things up at four.

Rainbow Warrior starting pitcher Randy Abshier struck out nine batters over four innings with just one walk, giving him 20 punch-outs in his last two starts. Miura drove in multiple runs for the second straight game and now has a team-leading 12 RBIs on the season.

The Rainbow Warriors and Crusaders play game three of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
