Softball Falls to Nevada in Season Opener

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team fell to Nevada, 10-2 to open both the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic and the 2024 season. The Wolf Pack launched five home runs en route to the five inning win. In the loss, Ka'ena Keliinoi went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead the Rainbow Wahine on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
 
The Wolf Pack quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top powered by three home runs.
 
In response, Hawai'i loaded the bases with no outs won a pair of walks that sandwiched a single. UH got one walk back when Chloe Borges drew a walk to drive in Maya Nakamura. But the Wolf Pack then got two fly-outs to snuff out the rally.
 
Nevada extended its lead to 7-1 an a two-run shot to center.
 
Keliinoi led off the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left to cut their deficit to five, 7-2.
 
But the Wolf Pack tacked on two runs in the fourth an another run in the fifth to pull away for the 10-2 win.
 
Hawai'i's Key-Annah Campbell-Pua suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits with three walks. Chloe Borges split time playing centerfield and pitching in the middle of the game. She allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Millie Fidge tossed the final frame to close the game, allowing a run on a pair of hits with a strikeout.
 
Nevada's Blake Craft earned the win allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts, while Tyra Clary threw the final 1-2/3 shut out innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
 
The Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic continues on Friday. Hawai'i's game against Kansas City will cap off the four-game slate on Friday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. First pitch between the 'Bows and Roos is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. HT.
