Men’s Basketball Pulls Out OT Win Over UC San Diego

HONOLULU  —  Timely contributions throughout the lineup lifted the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to a gritty 94-86 victory over UC San Diego in overtime on Thursday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (13-11, 5-7 Big West) had lost their previous six overtime games dating back to 2021, but went 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line in the extra period to knock off the Tritons (15-9, 9-3), who entered the week among the leaders in the Big West standings.

UH forward Justin McKoy led the Rainbow Warriors by tying his career-high with 22 points while also adding nine rebounds and four assists and led six 'Bows scoring in double-digits.

Guard Noel Coleman added 16 points, including two key drives in overtime, while playing nearly 42 minutes. With senior guard JoVon McClanahan out for the game, Kody Williams stepped up with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field with two 3-pointers.

Guard Juan Munoz scored all 10 of his points in the second half and overtime, including a game-tying step-back 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Ryan Rapp hit two 3-pointers in overtime in a 13-point performance and delivered the decisive blow with 35 seconds left in the extra period. Forward Bernardo da Silva finished with 10 points and eight rebounds and UH posted its second highest point total of the season.

UH shot 55.6 percent from the field, its third highest percentage of the season and most efficient performance in Big West play, and won an overtime for the first time since Jan. 30, 2021 against UC Irvine.

UH scored the first bucket of the game but UCSD reeled off eight straight points and would maintain that lead throughout the half. The Tritons would build its lead to as many as nine points but the 'Bows stayed within striking distance and it was a 37-34 game at the break. Williams gave UH a spark scoring 10 points in the first half alone.

UH came out inspired out of the locker room in the second half and took its first lead since the opening minute of the game on a Williams' three-point play that put the 'Bows up, 43-42, at the 15:46 mark. UH extended its lead to eight, 54-46, on a Harry Rouliadeff layup with 11 minutes left.

UCSD clawed back and used an 8-0 run to take a 66-63 lead with 5:13 left, but UH answered again and Munoz's three-pointer tied the game at 72-72 with three minutes left.

At one stretch, the teams combined to hit 13 straight field goals with UCSD going 9 for 9 and UH 4 for 4.

With UCSD leading 78-75, UCSD's Bryce Pope missed a layup and Coleman grabbed the rebound and UH called a timeout with 23 seconds left.  The 'Bows worked the ball to Munoz on the left side, he stepped behind the 3-point line and knocked down the shot to force overtime.

Munoz scored the first bucket of overtime and two free throws by da Silva gave UH the lead for good. Rapp's first 3-pointer of OT gave UH an 85-80 lead and his second all but sealed the game with 35 seconds left.

Pope, the Tritons' leading scorer entering the game with 18.9 points per game, was limited to 10 points. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones, who previously played at Hawai'i Hilo, led the Tritons with a game-high 24 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field and 12-for-17 from the free-throw line.

The Rainbow Warriors will next square off against second-place UC Davis (15-8, 10-2) in the first meeting of the season between the teams on Saturday, Feb. 10. TIpoff is 7 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena.
