Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot-Shooting Rainbow Warriors Rout UC Davis

HONOLULU  —  The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team put together another all-around effort in an imprssive 87-70 win over UC Davis Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (14-11, 6-7 Big West) used a scorching first-half performance to build a double-digit halftime lead then put on the defensive clamps in the second half to secure their fourth win in the last five games.

UC Davis (15-9, 10-3) entered the game holding its opponents to a Big West-low 30 percent shooting from three-point land. But UH scorched the Aggies behind the arc, including a mind-blowing 9-of-11 showing in the first half. For the game, UH shot 12-of-20 — a season-best 60 percent — from deep and picked up its fifth straight win over UC Davis in Honolulu.

Bernardo da Silva led UH with his sixth double-double of the season, notching 19 points and 12 rebounds and adding four assists. Noel Coleman poured in 18 points while Justin McKoy finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his second UH double-double. Freshman Tom Beattie contributed 11 points, one shy of his season high, in 32 minutes off the bench.

The Rainbow Warriors, who pulled out an overtime win over UC San Diego on Thursday, completed a sweep of their homestand to rise into a tie for sixth in the conference race with UC Santa Barbara. UH shot 53.1 percent overall from the field against the Aggies and went 54.4 percent for the homestand.

The league's leading scoring Elijah Pepper finished with 27 points for UC Davis but shot just 8-of-25 from the field including 3-of-13 on three-pointers. UH held the Aggies to just 26 percent shooting in the second half and denied them an opportunity to move into a tie for first place in the Big West standings.

UH was hot offensively for the first half, but so was UC Davis for a good portion and the Aggies held a 29-24 lead at the 5:53 mark of the half. But that's when UH made its game-changing move. The 'Bows exploded on an 18-2 run, including 12 unanswered points to take a double-digit lead. The Aggies stopped the bleeding momentarily, but Coleman punctuated UH's first-half showcase with a buzzer-beating three-pointer that put the 'Bows up 45-35 at the break.  UH shot an incredible 71 percent (15-of-21) from the floor, including a red-hot 9-of-11 on three-pointers. McKoy hit all three of his three-point attempts and had 13 first-half points.

UH scored first the six points out of the locker room and held the Aggies scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half to set the tone for the rest of the way.  UH built its lead to as many as 17 points taking a 71-54 lead with six minutes left and maintained a double-digit lead for all but eight seconds of the second half. UC Davis closed to nine at 77-68 with 1:43 left, but UH went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line to close out its third straight home win.

UH finished 23-of-27 from the line and out-rebounded the Aggies 39-27.

The Rainbow Warriors next head on the road for a pair of games, beginning with their second meeting with Cal Poly on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT.
