Rainbow Wahine Bow Out Of Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic With Loss To UCLA

HONOLULU  – The  ninth-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball concluded the season-opening Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic with a 5-0 quarterfinal loss to No. 2 UCLA Saturday morning at Queen's Beach. The loss capped a highly-competitive three days for the Rainbow Wahine (0-5) who faced four of the nation's top seven teams in college beach volleyball's premier tournament.

The BeachBows were unable to muster a win during the weekend but were competitive throughout and gained valuable experience against the stiffest challenge it should face this season. UH also had a much better showing against the Bruins on Saturday, after dropping a 5-0 decision to them on Thursday's opening day.

Kaylee Glagau and Caprice Lorenzo went toe-to-toe with Peri Brennan and Devon Newberry at the No. 2 court before eventually falling in three sets, 13-21, 21-13, 15-10. The No. 3 pair of Riley Wagoner and Sydney Amiatu also gave Jaden Whitmarsh and Tessa Van Winkle all they could handle before succumbing 24-22, 21-16. The Bruins ultimately won in straight sets on four of five courts.

After going 1-3 in the first two days of the tournament, the Bruins win over UH kick-started a string of three straight wins on Saturday that catapulted them to the tournament title. UCLA defeated No. 7 Stanford in the semifinals, before advancing to the finals to face rival and top-ranked USC, who defeated No. 5 LMU in the other semifinal. UCLA ended up winning, 4-1, in the championship match.

UH will have next week off before returning to action with the Heineken Queen's Cup, Mar 7-9, at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine will host Pepperdine, Nebraska, Saint Mary's, Boise State and Chaminade in the three-day tournament.
