ST. GEORGE, Utah — A championship quest that began last week in Southern California reached its conclusion in Utah on Saturday as the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams completed a sweep of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in St. George, Utah.
The UH divers set the tone by capturing all six golds in the MPSF Diving Championship held Feb. 12-14 in Mission Viejo, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior swimming teams built on those performances over the four-day MPSF Swimming Championship this week at the Utah Tech Human Performance Center to sweep the MPSF titles for the first time since 2020.
The Rainbow Wahine entered the final day of the four-day meet with a commanding lead in the women's standings and won three events on Saturday to finish with a total of 794 points and captured their second straight MPSF title and seventh in the last eight years. UC Santa Barbara placed second with 606 points.
The Rainbow Warriors finished off a dominant week by shattering the UH and MPSF Championship records in the men's 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:50.54. UH finished with 794.5 points in the men's standings with UC Santa Barbara second with 667.5 points. The men's title was UH's first since 2020.
The Warriors won all five of the meet's relay events, setting the MPSF Championship record with each victory.
The Rainbow Wahine began Saturday's evening session with
Dorottya Dobos and
Anna Friedrich claiming gold and silver in the 200-yard backstroke.
Zofia Tyminska and
Kathryn Ivanov also went 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke and
Cass Treydte and
Holly Nelson claimed silver and bronze in the 100 freestyle.
The Rainbow Wahine capped their meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Treydte, Nelson, Friedrich and
Mira Selling finishing in 3:16.97, well ahead of runner-up UC Davis.
On the men's side, UH's
Jordan Meacham began the day by breaking the school record in the 100 freestyle in the preliminaries with a time of 43.12 seconds. He then lowered the mark again in the finals with a time of 42.86 seconds.
Timothy Gallagher began the evening with a silver in the 200 backstroke and
Justin Lisoway earned bronze in the 200 breaststroke.
The Rainbow Warriors punctuated the meet with their record swim in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of
Karol Ostrowski, Meacham,
Dietrich Meyer and
Mario Surkovic. Ostrowski turned in a lead-off leg of 42.66 seconds to give UH the lead. Meacham and Meyer widened the margin and Surkovic finished off a performance that shattered the previous UH record of 2:53.70 set last year by Surkovic, Meacham,
Ian Venter and Gallagher. They also broke the MPSF record of 2:52.25 set by BYU last year.
In all, UH won five women's events (three individual, two relays) and the nine men's events (four individual, five relays) in the meet.
