BeachBows Fall To LMU, UCLA On Opening Day Of Season

HONOLULU – The ninth-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team opened the 2024 season with a pair of losses in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Thursday at Queen's Beach. Hosting the top teams in the country, UH began round-robin action by losing a competitive battle versus No. 5 LMU, 4-1, before being blanked by No. 2 UCLA, 5-0.

In the tournament opener, UH fell to LMU in a match closer than the final score indicated. The dual was tied 1-1 with each of the final three courts extended to a third and deciding set. The Lions ended up winning the final three courts with Anna Pelloia and Jacinda Ramirez outlasting Arianna Franklin and Kaylee Glagau 24-22, 18-21, 15-10 at the No. 3 flight for the clinching point. UH got its lone point from Sydney Amiatu and Riley Wagoner at court No. 4 as they defeated Chloe Hooker and Jaeya Brach in straight sets 21-19, 21-17.

In UH's second match of the day, the 'Bows were over-matched by No. 2 UCLA. The Bruins took four of the five courts in straight sets. The top flight was a battle as UH's Jaime Santer and newcomer Alana Embry took UCLA's Maggie Boyd and Lexy Denaburg to the limit in a bid to claim final point of the dual match. The Bruins pair ultimately escaped with a 21-17, 18-21, 15-13 win to complete the sweep. UCLA has now won the last 12 meetings between the teams and 13 of the last 14.

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic resumes on Friday morning, starting with a match between UH and No. 7 Stanford at 9:00 a.m. The Rainbow Warriors will wrap up round-robin action with a showdown against top-ranked USC at 12:45 p.m.
