Men’s Basketball Romps At Cal Poly, 80-51

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.  —  The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team continued its winning ways with a 80-51 road blowout of Cal Poly Thursday night at Mott Athletics Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 15-11 overall and 7-7 in the Big West with their fifth win in its last six contests.

UH continued its ascent up the Big West standings, leveling its league record for the first time this year and moving into sole possession of sixth in the standings, just 1.5 games out of a top-four spot.

The 29-point win marked UH's largest-ever margin of victory in a Big West road game and just one off the mark for its largest margin ever in any road game, both conference and non-conference. UH led by as many as 33 points in the contest while dominating on both ends of the court.

Juan Munoz led UH with 20 points while burying 5-of-9 three pointers. The senior guard did that while playing just 21 minutes and sitting the majority of the second half with the game in hand.  Justin McKoy added 18 points, while Ryan Rapp finished in double-digits for the fourth time in the last five games with10 points.

UH shot 56 percent for the game, marking the third straight game that the 'Bows shot better than 50 percent. The "Bows also continued to have the touch from deep, draining 9-of-21 attempts (43 percent).

The Mustangs (4-22, 0-14) came into the game short-handed with leading scorer Kobe Sanders and leading rebounder Joel Armotrading unavailable. UH took full advantage, holding the offensively-challenged Cal Poly squad to just 28 percent shooting for the game. UH defeated Cal Poly for the eighth straight time and the third straight time in San Luis Obispo.

UH began to breakaway midway through the first half. The 'Bows held a slim 14-11 lead but proceeded to hold the Mustangs scoreless for next four minutes and scored nine unanswered points to take a double-digit advantage. UH built its lead to as many as 17 points before taking a 35-20 lead into the locker room. Munoz and McKoy combined for 24 of the team's first-half points as UH shot 46 percent from the floor while holding the Mustangs to just 23 percent (7-of-30).

UH scored the first five points out of the break to spark a 14-2 run that ballooned the team's lead to 27 points less than five minutes into the second half. It wouldn't get any better for the Mustangs thereafter, as the 'Bows shot a scorching 67 percent in the second half. Meanwhile,Cal Poly's offensive struggles continued after the break with the Mustangs shooting just 32 percent.
