Men’s Basketball Drops Road Opener At Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif.. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell to Long Beach State, 76-68, in its Big West opener Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference with its second straight road loss.

Devin Askew poured in a career-high 28 points as Long Beach State (3-8, 2-0) won its second straight Big West contest following eight straight non-conference losses. Askew also added six rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in a supreme all-around performance.

UH was led by Marcus Greene who scored 17 points for the second straight time. Gytis Nemeikša had 14 points and seven rebounds in his first career start as a Rainbow Warrior, while Akira Jacobs added 11 points, all in the first half, off the bench. Tanner Christensen posted his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Beach went a sizzling 10-of-13 from three-point land, including 4-of-5 from Askew, and went a near perfect 16-of-17 from the line. For the second straight game, UH was plagued by turnovers, committing 17 for the game. LBSU parlayed those turnovers into 27 points.

The first half was back-and-forth. There were five lead changes and a pair of runs by both teams. UH scored 11 unanswered points – eight of them coming from Jacobs – to take a 22-15 lead midway through the half. But LBSU eventually went on an 11-0 run of their own. The Beach took momentum into the locker room with three straight field goals, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Askew that made it a 37-32 game at the break.

The Beach would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game. Holding on to 58-52 lead with seven minutes left, LBSU made a game-turning run. The Beach scored seven consecutive points to spark an 11-2 run that put them in firm control with a 69-54 lead. UH would get no closer than seven points thereafter.

The Rainbow Warriors will return home where they will resume non-conference play against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Dec.14. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center
