Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rapp’s Career Night Lifts Men’s Basketball To Home Win

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team started a six-game homestand on a winning note with a 71-62 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Ryan Rapp scored a career-high 19 points off the bench to lift the 'Bows to their sixth home win this season, after dropping its last two games on the road. UH has now won 12 of its last 13 games at the SSC dating back to last season.

Rapp sparked UH on both ends of the court after the team fell behind by as many as eight in the first half, then slammed the door shut in the second half with his clutch shooting. The senior captain went 7-of-8 from the field and hit all five of his three-point attempts while also adding team-highs in rebounds (6) and assists (3).

Marcus Greene scored 11 of his 15 points after the break to help UH pull away from the Islanders after a deadlocked first half. Gytis Nemeikša added 14 points in his second straight start.

It was a rough-and-tumble affair in the second all-time meeting between the squads and first in 22 years. The Islanders (6-5) turned the 'Bows over 10 times and held them scoreless for more than four minutes to build an eight-point first-half lead. But led by Rapp, UH ended the half on a 9-2 run to knot the game, 28-28, at the break.

The 'Bows continued that momentum in the first five minutes of the second half. UH went on a 14-3 run, including nine unanswered, to take a double-digit lead. The Islanders battled back and cut it to a 47-46 game with less than eight minutes left.

But once again UH made another run. The 'Bows scored seven points – including five by Greene – and 12 of the next 14 to build its lead back to double-digits. Rapp's three-pointer with 5:30 left made it a 59-48 game and his fifth and final three-pointer of the night at the three-minute mark provided the final dagger in UH's bounceback win.

Next up for the Rainbow Warriors is  Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. UH opens the tournament on Sunday, Dec. 22 with a first-round matchup versus Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. Also in this year's field are College of Charleston, Loyola Chicago, Oakland, Nebraska, and Oregon State.
