Swim & Dive Heads to Dallas for SMU Invitational

DALLAS, Texas — The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swim and dive teams return to action this week in the SMU Invitational at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center in Dallas, Texas. The meet runs from Wednesday, Nov. 20 - Saturday, Nov. 23. Hawai'i will battle BYU, Drury, Miami (FL), Stanford, Wyoming and host SMU.

Competition begins at 2:00 p.m. HT on Wednesday. The schedule on Thursday to Saturday begins with preliminaries at 6:00 a.m. followed by finals at 2:00 p.m.

The 'Bows are returning after both men's and women's swim and dive teams swept two days of competition in dominant fashion against GCU. The Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warriors won 36 of 52 events against the 'Lopes in the two dual meets last month

Senior Milan Bukovics claimed his first Big West Athlete of the Week award this season after winning three races including the 100 butterfly (47.95), 100 individual medley (49.72) and 200 individual medley (1:49.63). This was Bukovic's second conference weekly honor of his career after earning Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's (MPSF) weekly award last season on Oct. 18.

Catherine Belyakov continued her hot start to the year, picking up her second Big West Athlete of the Week honor. Belyakov won all four individual events she competed in, posting top-10 times in Rainbow Wahine history in three of her four victories. She earned the second-fastest time in the 200 IM (1:58.67), the fifth-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.20) and the sixth-fastest time in the 100 freestyle (49.07). Belyakov also won the 100 individual medley with a mark of 54.61.

In both men's and women's diving , Hawai'i's freshmen dominated in the GCU dual meets. On the women's side, the Rainbow Wahine captured the top five spots in the 1M and the top four finishes in the 3M. UH freshman Maci Wheeler won both the 1M and 3M ispringboard to lead the way. In the first dual meet in the 1M event, Wheeler amassed 298.05 total points, while fellow UH freshman Lovissa Gustavsson came in second place with a total of 2589.75 points. In the 3M springboard, Wheeler totaled 333.00 points for the win while UH's Ruby Pickron secured second place with 275.33 total points. In the women's platform exhibition, Gustavsson took first place with 242.63 points and Wheeler took second place witha total of 237.23 points.

On the men's diving front, UH's Juan Ramirez Tamayo won first place against GCU in both the 3M and 1M springboard events. In the 3M dive, Tamayo pulled away to take first place with a total of 380.78 points while in the 1M he captured the top spot with 327.38 total points. In the platform exhibition, Tamayo finished in second place finishing the competition with 336.00 points.
