WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Amber Gilbert delivered the lone goal of the match to lead the Hawai'i soccer team to a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton Sunday to extend its winning streak to six matches and improve to 4-0 in Big West play.
The six-match winning streak is the longest by a Rainbow Wahine team since 2003 while UH's 4-0 start to Big West play is the best-ever start to a conference season in school history. Additionally, the 'Bows are the first Big West team to start conference play 4-0 since 2016 while the win was the program's first over the Titans since 2008.
After the two teams went scoreless through the first 57 minutes, the Rainbow Wahine broke through when Gilbert finished off of a beautiful cross by
Mia Foster from just outside the box to make it 1-0.
The 'Bows narrowly missed out on extending the lead with a handful of attacks in the ensuing minutes, but the UH defense held up to pitch its third consecutive shutout. Goalkeeper
Kennedy Justin became the first Hawai'i keeper since 2019 (Alexis Mata) to record three consecutive clean sheets, making a pair of saves while organizing a defense that allowed just eight shot attempts.
The Hawai'i defense held its fourth straight opponent to fewer than 10 shot attempts, giving up just eight shots per match over that span and a total of just seven shots on goal. It's also the seventh time in eight wins that the Rainbow Wahine have scored the go-ahead goal in the second half.
The Rainbow Wahine will head back on the road for a pair of matches next week, starting Thursday at UC San Diego at 4 p.m. HT.
