HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swim and dive team defeated Grand Canyon 155-88 in the home opener in front of a great crowd at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Steve Allnut recorded his first win as UH's head coach, leading the 'Bows in dominant fashion in the dual meet over Grand Canyon.
The Rainbow Wahine dive team got the night off to an impressive start with each diver placing in the top-five of the 1-meter dive. Freshman Macie Wheeler won the event with a mark of 298.05, followed by Lovisa Gustvsson (258.75) and Ruby Pickron (250.20) in second and third place respectively. The top-five was rounded out by Avery Coates in fourth with a mark of 230.33 and Isbella Plantz in fifth with a mark of 214.05.
Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo, UH's lone male diver, won the 3-meter dive with a mark of 380.78 to hold off four GCU divers.
UH claimed victories in all four relay events including the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. The Rainbow Wahine squad of Alexa Ozment, Mandolin Ngyuen, Eva Kovaluk and Zofia Tyminska won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.78. The team of Alexia Kovaluk, Eva Kovaluk, Mia Blazevska Eminova and Nellie Thompson earned first in the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:24.64. The Rainbow Warrior foursome of Karol Ostrowski, Tom Caps, Jack Simon and Jordan Mecham placed first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.40. The 400 freestyle relay team of Ostrowski, Meacham, Finn Brophy and Victor Dagenais pulled away for first with a time of 2:56.36.
The Rainbow Wahine swim team tallied eight wins in individual competitions led by Catherine Belyakov who continued her impressive start to the season with multiple wins and notching top-10 times in UH history. Belyakov won the 100 breaststroke with the fifth fastest time in Rainbow Wahine history coming in at 1:01.20. Belyakov also placed first in the 100 freestyle touching the wall at 49.07 which is tied for the sixth fastest time in Rainbow Wahine history. The senior transfer closed out the night with a win in the 100 IM with a mark of 54.61.
Ella Varga won the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.07 which is tied for the sixth fastest time in Rainbow Wahine history. Arianna Sakellaris finished in first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:16.77. Varga and Sakellaris both earned their first wins in individual competition this season. Kaya Takashige swam the ninth-fastest time (54.38) in Rainbow Wahine history in a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly.
The Rainbow Warrior swim team tallied nine wins in individual competitions against the 'Lopes. The 'Bows were led by Ostrowski, Caps and Milan Bukovics who each won two races. Ostrowski won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 19.70 and the 50 backstroke with a time of 21.77. Caps won the 50 breaststroke with a mark of 25.20 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.41. Bukovics finished first in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 47.95 and the 100 IM with a time of 49.72.
The Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior swim and dive squads combined to win 23 of 30 events against the 'Lopes on Friday night.
UH returns to the DKAC tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. HT for the final day of competition with Grand Canyon.
