Warriors Fight Hard But Fall to Boise State

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i football team fought hard, but couldn't finish the deal as No. 17 Boise State's high-powered offense woke up in time to score 15 fourth-quarter points and hand the Rainbow Warriors a 28-7 loss before a sold-out crowd on Saturday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.

The Broncos notched their 10th straight win over Hawai'i, matching BYU's win streak against UH. Hawaii's last win over Boise State came in 2007, a 39-27 victory by the Colt Brennan-led Warriors.

Hawai'i (2-4, 0-2 MW) looked like they had a chance to snap that streak early, as the UH run defense kept Ashton Jeanty down for as long as they could. Jeanty scored just once in the first half. He did run for 110 yards on 15 carries in the first two quarters, but nearly half of his first-half production came on a 54-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The Heisman hopeful matched his first-half output in the second, finishing with 217 yards on 31 carries, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.

The Rainbow Warriors offense was led by Brayden Schager, who completed 21-of-36 passes for a game-high 264 yards. Schager delivered UH's lone-touchdown of the game, connecting with Tylan Hines for a 27-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

After Jeanty ran for 13 yards on Boise State's first offensive play of the game, Hawai'i's run defense adjusted. Jeanty's next four runs went for one, four, three and six yards as Boise State settled for a Jonah Dalmas field goal.

On Boise State's next drive, Jeanty broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run down the right sideline to put the Broncos up 10-0. Meanwhile, Hawai'i picked up just one first down on their first two drives of the game.

Boise State (5-1, 2-0 MW) added to their lead with another Dalmas field goal after a 17-play drive, making it three straight scoring drives for the Broncos to start the game.

The 'Bows offense finally got rolling in the second quarter. Schager's screen pass to Landon Sims resulted in a 52-yard pick up, putting Hawai'i in the red zone for the first time. Three plays later, Schager found Hines in the endzone for a 27-yard touchdown strike to cut Boise State's lead to 13-7 heading into the halftime break.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter, before Boise State broke the second-half stalemate on the first drive of the fourth quarter. The Broncos drove down to the Hawai'i 5-yard line before Jeanty fumbled the ball. After a long replay, Jeanty was ruled down by the officials. One play later, Jeanty caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Maddux Madsen. Boise State converted the ensuing two-point conversion to go up 21-7.

Hawai'i responded with a 14-play drive that reached the Boise State 6-yard line, but an eight-yard sack and a UH false start led to a turnover on downs on fourth-and-19. Boise State later scored on a 44-yard pass from Madsen to Austin Bolt to seal the 28-7 win.
