Rainbow Warriors Drop Road Contest To Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – In its first ever visit to Pullman, the University of Hawai'i football team fell to Washington State, 42-10, in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon at Gesa Field. UH dropped to 2-5 overall with their third straight setback.

UH got on the board first, but Washington State scored 21 straight points to take a double-digit lead that it would not relinquish. The win moved the Cougars to 6-1 on the year for their best start since 2018.

Cougar quarterback John Mateer passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two others while accounting for 329 yards of total offense (295 passing, 34 rushing), in leading the Cougars to their first win over UH in the last three meetings. Mateer threw for 202 and three touchdowns on 15-of-17 passing in the first half alone to give the Cougars a 21-3 lead at the break.

Turnovers and missed opportunities doomed the Warriors early. UH drove into the red zone on its first two possessions, but mustered just three points. It came to bite back the Warriors who turned the ball over twice in a pair of proceeding drives, including just their second lost fumble this season.

The Cougars parlayed those turnovers into a pair of touchdowns - one for a 44-yard drive and the other for a 46-yard drive. Both drives ended with 9-yard touchdown passes from Mateer and an 18-point advantage at the break.

UH came out of the locker room strong, driving 75 yards down the field on its opening possession. Schager found Tylan Hines for a 17-yard connection to cut the deficit to 21-10. It marked the third straight game that Hines found the endzone. But Wazzu answered right back with a 60-yard drive, the beginning of another 21-point point run that put the game away for good.

The Rainbow Warriors return to Mountain West action when they face Nevada for Homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at the Ching Complex.
