Men’s Basketball Gets Back On Track With Win At CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team halted a three-game losing streak while picking up its first  Big West win of the year with a 78-67 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Thursday night at the Icardo Center. With the win UH moved to 9-5 overall and evened its Big West record at 1-1.

The Rainbow Warriors led for the near entirety of the contest. UH took an 18-point advantage by halftime, built its lead to as many as 23 points in the second half and held off a relentless Roadrunner squad (5-9, 0-3) to pull off a double-digit win in its first true road game of the year.

JoVon McClanahan led four Rainbow Warriors in double-digits with 19 points and four assists. Justin McKoy set a new career-high with 18 points before fouling out in the waning minutes, while Bernardo da Silva also had a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Noel Coleman chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.

Dalph Panopio led the Roadrunners with a career-high 23 points.

UH shot 62 percent form the floor while holding CSUB to just 35 percent in the decisive first half as UH took a commanding 41-23 lead into the locker room. The 'Bows held a 27-20 lead with just under five minutes left in the half, but ended on a 14-3 run, fueled by eight points from McClanahan.

UH went up, 56-33, on a da Silva dunk at the 14:30 mark. The Roadrunners scored 12 unanswered to cut the deficit in half, but UH would maintain its double-digit lead through the near entirety of the second half while fending off every CSUB comeback attempt.

The 'Bows shot 55 percent from the floor for the game, out-rebounded CSUB, 35-23, and converted on 22-of-31 free throw attempts. UH has now won five of its last six Big West regular-season road games dating back to last year, while also extending its win streak over the Roadrunners to five games.

The Rainbow Warriors next head to Northridge to take on a CSUN squad that has started the season 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m. HT.
