Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUN Pulls Away From Hawai‘i, 76-66

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — In a back-and-forth affair, CSUN had the final word in a 76-66 win over  University of Hawai'i men's basketball team Saturday night at the Premier America Credit Union Arena. UH dropped to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the Big West with its first loss to CSUN in the last five meetings.

Meanwhile, a resurgent Matador squad (12-3, 3-0) picked up their seventh straight win and remained unblemished in Big West play. The seven-game win streak is the longest in CSUN's Division I history.

The game was much closer than the final indicated. The game featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes and it was just a one-point game with less than five minutes remaining. But CSUN out-scored UH 14-5 the rest of the way to secure the win and hand UH just its second loss in its last seven Big West regular-season road games.

UH lost despite JoVon McClanahan's season-high 23 points. The senior scored 17 of those points in the first half alone. Noel Coleman finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while Justin McKoy added 12 points and five rebounds.

De'Sean Allen-Eikens led four Matadors in double-figures with 20 points, while Gianni Hunt poured in16.

UH rode the hot hand of McClanahan early on. The senior guard drilled his first three attempts from behind the arc and scored 15 of the team's first 18 points. UH led by as many as seven, but CSUN clawed back in a first half that saw 10 ties and six lead changes. A see-saw affair first half concluded with the teams knotted, 37-37, at the break.

UH held a 55-53 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. CSUN scored six unanswered points to move ahead and clung to the lead for the remainder. A pair of McKoy free throws made it a 62-61 game with 4:32 left. But the Matadors scored seven of the next nine points, capped by a Gianni Hunt three-pointer that gave CSUN a 69-63 lead -- its biggest lead to that point - with 2:35 left.

CSUN entered the game leading the Big West in field goal percentage defense and held UH to a season-low 32.8 percent shooting from the floor. The 'Bows drilled 11 three-pointers to fuel their offense, but couldn't overcome a CSUN squad that went to the free throw line early and often. The Matadors finished the game going 25-of-30 from the line, while UH went 13-of-18.

The Rainbow Warriors now return home for a pair of games, beginning with a clash versus Big West leader UC Irvine (11-4, 4-0) on Thursday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. HT at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
