Men’s Volleyball Wins In Four At Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team completed its three-match road trip to the Hoosier State with a four-set win over No. 15 Ball State, Sunday at Worthen Arena. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19.

The Rainbow Warriors (6-1) won the first time in three chances in Muncie, Ind., avenging a pair of losses to the Cardinals in 2022. The victory also extended UH's road win streak to 15 matches dating back to 2022 and its win streak over the Cardinals to four.

Three UH attackers finished with double figure kills led by outside hitter Spyros Chakas, who had 14 kills. Opposite Alaka'i Todd added 12 kills and outside hitter Chaz Galloway had 10, hitting at a .474 clip. Middle blocker Guilherme Voss hit .900 with nine kills in 10 errorless attempts.

As a team, UH hit .366 and served nine aces. The Warriors also had a season-high 11.5 blocks. Todd finished with three aces while Chakas, Tread Rosenthal, and Keoni Thiim each had two. Voss led UH's frontline with a season-high six blocks.

The Cardinals (7-5) were led by Tinaishe Ndavazocheva and Braydon Savitski-Lynde, who each had 16 kills. Patrick Rogers added 13 kills.

UH's serving propelled them to victory in the opening set with six aces, including one by Thiim, whose rocket made it 21-17. The Cardinals fended off three set points to close to within one but Todd's third kill of the set closed out the game.

The Cardinals held the lead for most of the second set until the Warriors tied it at 16. The score was tied at 21 after a successful UH challenge but the Cardinals reeled off the next three points to get to set point. After consecutive Hawai'i points, Ndavazocheva's kill evened the match at 1-1.

UH gained the early advantage in the third set taking a 11-7 lead. Hawai'i led 20-15 after a triple block but the Cardinals pulled within two at 22-20. A Chakas-Nusterer double block, UH's fourth of the set, closed it out.

Back-to-back aces by Todd gave UH an early 8-4 lead to start Set 4. The lead was seven after a 4-0 scoring spurt made it 13-6 and the Warriors were never threatened the rest of the way.

Hawai'i returns to Honolulu to begin a 11-match homestand with a two-match series against Tusculum, Friday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 4 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
