Men's Basketball Puts The Clamps on UC Riverside To Earn Big West Win

HONOLULU —  The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got back into the win column with a hard-earned 63-56 win over UC Riverside Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big West, while snapping a four-game home losing streak.

UH got the win with incredible defense down the stretch. Two nights after an offensive drought cost them in a loss versus UC Irvine, the 'Bows turned the tables on UC Riverside. UH held the Highlanders to just one field goal in the final nine minutes of the game to turn a three-point deficit into an eight-point win

UH overcame its recent struggles from the free-throw line by going 18-of-21 from the line, including six straight in the final 45 seconds to seal the win.

UH guard JoVon McClanahan led the Rainbow Warriors with 14 points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

After being shutout against UC Irvine on Thursday and in the first half on Saturday, UH guard Noel Coleman broke through with 10 points in the second half to help spark the 'Bows. Coleman also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and forward Justin McKoy added nine points and seven boards.

Forward Bernardo da Silva finished with six points, including a go-ahead layup that gave UH a 51-50 lead with 5:39 left. Da Silva's bucket was part of a decisive 10-0 UH run and the 'Bows held off the Highlanders on the defensive end to earn a split of the homestand.

UCR guard Barrington Hargress led the Highlanders with a game-high 18 points. But UH held UCR to 7-for-24 shooting in the second half, including a 2-for-11 showing from 3-point range, and won the rebounding battle 33-25.

UH got off to a fast start hitting five of its first seven shots. UCR was equally hot and held a slight 19-18 lead midway through the first half. But UH seldom-used freshman Akira Jacobs drilled a pair of three-pointers to fuel a 10-2 run. The 'Bows led by as many as eight points before taking a 35-34 lead into the locker room. UH shot 54 percent in the first half, while UCR shot 50 percent.

There were five lead changes over the first nine minutes of the second half and UCR led 50-47 on a Hargress layup with 9:08 left in regulation. UH responded with the 10-0 burst with five players contributing to the run while UCR went cold. Coleman ignited the run with a layup followed by da Silva's go-ahead score. McKoy and Tom Beattie added to the lead and McClanahan drained a jumper to give UH a 57-50 cushion with 1:04 remaining.

Wil Tattersall ended UCR's drought with a 3-pointer to cut UH's lead to 59-55 with 41 seconds left, but McClanahan and McKoy sealed the win from the free-throw line.

The Rainbow Warriors now head out to the road for a pair of games, starting with a matchup at Long Beach State. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT at the Walter Pyramid.
