Long Beach Rides Torrid Shooting To Win Over Hawai‘i

LONG BEACH STATE —  The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Long Beach State squad in a 79-71 road setback Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid. WIth the loss UH fell to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.

The Beach (12-7, 4-3) were nearly unstoppable in the first half, shooting 75 percent (18-of-24) to take a 17-point lead into the break. LBSU used that performance to snap a two-game slide and beat UH for just the second time in the last seven meetings.

The 'Bows fell despite a career-high 22-point performance by Justin McKoy. The graduate transfer scored 19 of his points in the first half alone and finished the game shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-11 on three-pointers. Juan Munoz finished with 12 points, while Bernardo da Silva added 11 for the Rainbow Warriors.

Four different LBSU players finished in double-digits led by Marcus Tshohnis with 20 points and Jadon Jones with 19.

The game pitted the league's top scoring offense in Long Beach State (80.1) versus the top scoring defense (65.8) in Hawai'i with the Beach ultimately dictating the game. The Beach went on scoring runs of 11-0 and 12-0 in the first half and turned the ball over just once in the first 20 minutes to take a stranglehold of  the game.

Despite that first-half blitz, the 'Bows didn't fold. UH trailed by as many as 22 points after intermission, but it cut the lead in half with four minutes left in the game. A  Muoz three-pointer made it 77-69 with just under a minute left. However it was too little, too late for the Rainbow Warriors.

LBSU finished the game shooting 56 percent, while UH's 32 percent shooting in the first half contributed to their hole. The 'Bows shot 52 percent in the second half and got 32 points from its bench led by Munoz, Mor Seck (7), Matthue Cotton (7) and Akira Jacobs (6) to help fuel the late rally.

The Rainbow Warriors next head south for a meeting with UC San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. PT/2:00 p.m. HT at the Lion Tree Arena. The Tritons (11-7, 5-1) fell to UC Irvine, 76-65, in battle between the league's top teams on Thursday.
