Rainbow Wahine Tie UNLV To Cap Road Trip

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — University of Hawai'i sophomore forward Amber Gilbert scored her team-high fourth goal of the season, senior goalkeeper Sophie Augustin repeatedly denied UNLV threats in the final moments and the Rainbow Wahine soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with the Rebels on Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.

After UNLV took the lead with a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, Gilbert scored the equalizer less than two minutes later and Augustin posted seven saves — five in the second half — as the Rainbow Wahine closed non-conference play at 1-2-2.

UNLV (2-2-2) struck first in the fifth all-time meeting between the programs, and the first since 2015, after drawing a foul in the box midway through the first half. Kitty Jones-Black, a Kamehameha graduate, converted the penalty kick into the left side of the net to push the Rebels ahead.

The Rainbow Wahine answered quickly when Gilbert tracked down a high bouncing ball and poked it past the UNLV goalkeeper near the top of the box. She then slipped a shot past two Rebel defenders and into the right side of the net to even the match in the 25th minute and tie her goal total of the 2022 season when she was named to the Big West's All-Freshman team.

Gilbert nearly gave UH the lead moments later when her shot from the right side banged off the crossbar and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

The Rainbow Wahine kept the pressure on in the second half and the teams traded shots in a frantic final 10 minutes. Augustin came out to stop a shot by UNLV's Trinity Buchanan then denied another on the rebound and made another save on a drive from Kam Jalayer with just under five minutes to play.

UH put together a final push and a shot by Brynn Mitchell was punched over the goal by UNLV keeper Lucia Guemes with less than a minute left. UH's corner kick as time expired was turned away and the series between the teams remained knotted at 2-2-1.

UH took 17 shots to UNLV's 14 and Guemes finished with five saves for the Rebels.

UH returns home following a two-game road trip and will have an 11-day break between matches before opening the Big West schedule against CSUN on Sept. 14 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.
