Shipley Named To Lou Groza Award Watch List

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – University of Hawai'i placekicker Matthew Shipley was selected to the 30-player watch list for the 2023 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

This year marks the second consecutive year Shipley has been selected to the watch list. In 2021, the Liberty Hill, Texas native was named a semifinalist for the award.

Shipley is coming off his second straight season in which he converted 80 percent of his field goal attempts. Over the last two seasons, he made 34-of-41 field goal attempts, including 16-of-20 last year. He is also 69-of-70 in PAT attempts over the last two seasons.

He is one of six Mountain West kickers named to the watch list along with San Diego State's Jack Browning, Boise State's Jonah Dalmas, Air Force's Matthew Dapore, Wyoming's John Hoyland, and Nevada's Brandon Talton. The Mountain West has the most nominees of all 10 FBS conferences, followed by the ACC, Big 12 and SEC at four.

The award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, November 9th. From this list, a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers selects the top three finalists for the award, announced on Tuesday, November 28th. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced in December during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The 32nd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet at the West Palm Beach Marriott on December 4th.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
