Two New Assistant Coaches Join Football Staff

HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i defensive lineman and tight end Jordan Pu'u-Robinson and veteran secondary coach Steven Irvin joins head coach Timmy Chang's coaching staff for the 2023 season. Pu'u-Robinson will coach the defensive ends while Irvin will oversee the cornerbacks.

Pu'u-Robinson, a Wailuku, Maui native, spent two previous seasons on the Rainbow Warriors coaching staff, working with the defensive line as a graduate assistant in 2021 and with the special teams and tight ends as quality control coach last season. In January, Pu'u-Robinson earned his first full-time position at The Citadel as defensive line coach before re-joining the staff.

Pu'u-Robinson began his coaching career at Mercer as a quality control coach in 2020, assisting with the linebackers. The following year, he joined the UH coaching staff as a graduate assistant before being hired as a quality control coach in 2022 on Chang's inaugural staff.

An all-state and all-league performer at Maui's Baldwin High School, Pu'u-Robinson attended Washington State for three years (2009-11) before returning to his home state to play for the Rainbow Warriors for his final three seasons of eligibility (2012-14). He made the switch to tight end in 2013 and made seven starts as a senior in 2014, earning all-academic team honors.

Irvin comes to Mānoa after his second stint at the University of San Diego, where he coached the linebackers for the past three seasons. Overall, Irvin has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience including stops at Mountain West rivals San Diego State (2002-05) and his alma mater UNLV (2018-19).

Nearly half of his career was spent at USD where he was also the Toreros' defensive coordinator for five seasons (2013-17) and cornerbacks coach for two (2011-12). As defensive coordinator, USD had the Pioneer Football League's No. 1 ranked defense in 2016 and ranked first in scoring defense in both 2016 and '17.

Irvin also had coaching stints at Texas State, where he coached the cornerbacks from 2008-10 and Montana State, where he was the assistant secondary coach in 2006. Irvin played two years of football at UNLV (1997-98) where he competed at linebacker before beginning his coaching career at the College of the Desert in 1999.
