Baseball Drops Midweek Game at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team fell into an early hole and couldn't respond in an 11-4 nonconference loss at Pepperdine on Wednesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (17-25) jumped out to an early lead with a four-run first inning. After a one-our solo homer made it 1-0, Pepperdine scored three two-out runs to open up 4-0 lead.

After Pepperdine added one more run in the second, the 'Bows got on the board in the third. Dallas Duarte was hit by a pitch for the school-record 39th time in his career to reach with two outs before a throwing error on a Matt Wong double down the left field line allowed him to score, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Pepperdine added one in the fourth and four in the fifth to open up a 10-1 lead before UH fought back with a three-run sixth. The 'Bows (21-16) cut the deficit to 10-4 with a pair of two-out doubles, the first by Nainoa Cardinez to score one run before Jared Quandt drove in two with a pinch-hit double off the wall one batter later.

Jacob Igawa extended his hitting streak to 10 games after going 2-for-4 with a double, batting (15-for-40) .375 over that stretch. Duarte turned in his sixth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4, and has a hit in six straight games and seven of eight since moving into the leadoff spot in the order. Quandt's pinch-hit two-run double gave him his fourth multi-RBI game of the year and first since Feb. 26 vs. North Dakota State.

Cameron Hagan turned in the best effort of the six UH pitchers, working two scoreless innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts while holding the Waves hitless. Dalton Renne worked 2.1 innings and struck out two while allowing a run in relief of Matthew Flores, who got his first collegiate start on the mound.

Hawai'i wraps up its road trip with a three-game Big West series against UC Irvine, starting Friday at 3 p.m. HT.
