Top-Seeded Women's Tennis Gears Up for Big West Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The 67th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (11-7, 8-1 Big West) enters the Big West Championship tournament as the No. 1 seed after claiming the 2023 BW regular season crown this past week with an 8-1 conference record. The Rainbow Wahine will open the tourney on Thursday, April 27 against the winner of the quarterfinal match-up between No. 8 seed UC Irvine and No. 9 seed UC Riverside.

BETWEEN THE LINES
  • 2017 is the only other season that UH entered the BW Championship as the No. 1 Seed. 
  • Hawai'i's only Big West Championship tourney title came in 2018 after upsetting top-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals, then held off Cal State Fullerton, 4-3 in championship match.
  • The 'Bows have won BW and a WAC tournament (2012) titles in the program's history.
  • The Rainbow Wahine won eight of their last nine matches with the one loss coming in a non-conference match at No. 26 USC last week.
  • Hawai'i has won seven consecutive matches in each of the last five-straight seasons (minus the COVID-shortened year of 2020)
  • Except for the two COVID-shortened years (2020 & '21), the UH team has recorded double-digit wins eight-straight years.
  • The 'Bows re-entered the ITA Rankings last week (April 18), coming in at No. 67. It is the second time this year that UH has been ranked. UH first entered the rankings on Feb. 21 at No. 64.
  • Two Rainbow Wahine have a team-best 12 wins apiece--senior Satsuki Takamura and sophomore Ana Vilcek.
    • Takamura has a UH-best 12-4 overall record and went a perfect 6-0 in conference matches. She has finished the season strong playing the last 12 matches on the No. 3 court.
    • Vilcek is 12-5 overall and has anchored the top of the lineup for 14 of UH's 16 dual matches 
  • Although senior transfer Rita Pinto got off to a slow start in singles beginning the season at 1-5 record early, but has since gone 9-2 for the rest of the season. She is 7-3 since finding a home playing at No. 5. 
  • In doubles, UH's Klara Novakova leads UH with a 10-7 overall record. She is the only Rainbow Wahine to have recorded double-digit wins in doubles. Novakova and partner Pinto have gone posted a team-best 7-4 record together. In singles, Novakova is 9-7 overall.
