HONOLULU – Hawai'i left-handed pitcher
Randy Abshier earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors Monday after his dominant complete-game shutout of Long Beach State Saturday.
Abshier turned in one of the best efforts on the mound in recent program history, giving up just two hits over nine shutout innings with nine strikeouts and only one walk against the Dirtbags in a 2-0 win. He's the first UH pitcher to toss a complete-game shutout since Logan Pouelsen on March 4, 2018 and the only Big West pitcher to throw a shutout this year.
The senior faced just four batters above the minimum and set Long Beach State down in order in five of the nine innings, retiring the final 10 batters of the game. A reliever his entire career before this season, the transfer from Arizona hadn't worked more than six innings in a game before this week and was efficient in Saturday's outing, throwing just 102 pitches.
On the season, Abshier is 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 44 strikeouts to 18 walks over 48.2 innings pitched. He has started a game on all 10 weekends this year, and has worked into the fifth inning in each of his last seven starts.
Abshier is the second Hawai'i pitcher to earn conference pitcher of the week honors this year, as
Harry Gustin took home the recognition on March 27 after throwing seven shutout innings vs. Tulane.
