Women’s Water Polo Defeats UC Davis 12-8 On Senior Night

HONOLULU  -- The No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team concluded its regular-season with a 12-8 Senior Night win over No. 12 UC Davis at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 19-5 overall and finished second in the Big West standings with a 6-1 mark.

UH countered a strong UC Davis start with a pivotal second quarter, then poured it on in the second half to secure the victory. In the process, UH sent seniors Libby Gault, Olivia Kistler and Emma van Rossum out on a winning note in their final home appearance.

Alba Bonamusa Boix recorded her seventh hat trick of the season with four goals to lead the 'Bows offensive attack. Three other players scored multiple goals for UH, including van Rossum, who netted a pair of goals in her last home match.  Meanwhile, Bridget Layburn was a stalwart in goal with 12 saves.

UH fell into an early hole as the Aggies scored on their first two possessions. UC Davis led 3-2 after one quarter of action. But the Rainbow Wahine scored three straight goals to start the second frame and never trailed again.

Davis responded with a pair of goals to tie things up, 5-5, midway through the second quarter. But Mantelatto Dias' second goal of the evening at the 3:17 mark gave UH the lead for good. The 'Bows took a 7-5 advantage into halftime and expanded its lead to as many as five goals in the second half.

Hawai'i has now defeated UC Davis 21 straight times, including all 10 Big West regular-season meetings.

The 'Bows will now turn their focus to the 2023 Big West Water Polo Championship, April 28-30 in Santa Barbara, Calif. No. 2 seed UH will open up with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 CSUN on Friday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m. PT/10:00 a.m. HT.
