Water Polo Cruises To Big West Quarterfinal Win Over CSUN

SANTA BARBARA, Calif  -- The  University of Hawai'i women's water polo team began the 2023 Big West Championship with a 18-7 quarterfinal rout of seventh-seeded CSUN Friday at the UCSB Campus Pool. UH was powered by the duo of Bia Mantellato Dias and Alba Bonamusa Boix who combined for nine goals, seven of which came in the decisive first half.

WIth the win the No. 2 seed Rainbow Wahine (20-5) advanced to the tournament semifinals where they will face No. 3 seed Long Beach State Saturday at 1:00 pm PT/10:00 am HT. The Beach (18-7), rallied past host and No. 6 seed UC Santa Barbara in the final quarterfinal matchup of the day.

In the process, UH also won its 20th match of the season. It marks the 10th 20-win season in school history and the program's first since 2018.

The match was tight early with the score tied, 3-3, less than a minute left in the first quarter. But UH reeled off four straight goals -- three from Mantellato Dias and another by Bonamusa Boix to take control of the match. The 'Bows built an 11-5 lead at intermission and cruised in the second half with the UH starters sitting out the near entirety of the final quarter.

Mantellato Dias finished with five goals, while Bonamusa Boix tallied four. They headlined an offensive explosion that saw nine different players in the scoring column. Bridget Layburn tallied seven saves in goal, while Charlotte Edler was the stopper in the final quarter, posting eight saves and just one goal allowed.

The Rainbow Wahine did a stellar job on Big West scoring leader Dorottya Telek, who entered Friday with 100 goals on the season. The sophomore was held scoreless for the entire first half and did not find the back of the net until midway through the third quarter with UH already in command. It was her lone goal of the match.

Hawai'i has now defeated CSUN (17-13) nine straight times, including a 12-3 win earlier this season in Northridge.
