BeachBows Fall To FIU, Rally Past LSU On Final Day Of East Meets West

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The No. 8 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team concluded an eight-day, 11-match road trip with a roller-coaster of a day in the East Meets West Invitational Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Rainbow Wahine (22-6) got tripped up by No. 16 Florida International, 3-2, before bouncing back with a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 5 LSU, 3-2.

UH finished 8-3 in its longest road trip of the year, including a 2-2 mark this weekend in the prestigious East Meets West. The 'Bows were powered by the All-American duo of Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle, who went 4-0 during the tournament and capped the weekend by earning the clinching point in UH's win over LSU.

In the first match of the day, UH was upset for the first time this season, falling to an FIU (10-13) squad that snapped a four-match slide. The 'Bows entered the contest having beaten the Panthers in the previous six all-time meetings, with three of the wins coming in Manhattan Beach. But the Panthers broke through with an anti-climatic win in which they captured the first three points. UH's two points came from the two of their most reliable pairs this year. Van Sickle and Glagau won in straight sets at No. 1, while Ilihia Huddleston and Jaime Santer pulled out a three-set victory at the No. 3 flight.

In the second match versus LSU (18-8), UH again fell in an early hole, dropping the first two courts, including a three-set loss by Huddleston and Santer at the No. 2 court, just their second loss in 17 matches this year. Things looked dire with UH falling behind a set at Flights 3 and 5 as well. But the duo of Kylin Loker-Riley Wagoner battled past Reilly Allred-Hannah Brister 18-21, 25-23, 15-13 at No. 3. The No. 5 pair of Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller followed suit, rallying back for a 18-21, 21-17, 15-11 win over Elizabeth Masters-Cassidy Chambers to level the dual match 2-2. That set the stage for Glagau and Van Sickle, who completed the rally with a 25-23, 21-16 win over Ellie Shank and Kylie Deberg.

UH will now enjoy a break for competition for nearly two weeks before hosting Arizona and Georgia State in its final regular-season homestand of the year, April 15-16, at the Ching Complex.
