BeachBows Complete 4-0 Weekend At The Best In West Tournament

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — The No. 9 University of Hawaii beach volleyball squad capped a perfect weekend at the Best in the West tournament with a pair of wins Sunday  in Laguna Beach. For the second straight day, the Rainbow Wahine beat Big West rivals Cal Poly and No. 14 Long Beach State, taking down the Mustangs, 4-1, before concluding the tourney with a dramatic 3-2 win over the Beach.

UH completed the two-day round-robin tournament with an unblemished 4-0 record. The BeachBows now stand at 7-3 on the season and have won five straight dual matches.

In the first match of the day, UH picked up its second win in as many days over Cal Poly (0-8). The Mustangs claimed the first point the day when Susie Lloyd and Margo Smith squeezed past  Sophie Buschmann and Ilihia Huddleston (UH) 22-20, 21-19. But the "Bows would go on to win the remaining four courts for the decisive victory. It was highlighted by straight sets wins by the pairs of Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle at No. 1 and Jaime Santer and Anna Maidment at No. 3 Glagau and Van Sickle were particularly impressive, ripping  through Jayelin Lombard and Piper Naess 21-9, 21-13.

In the final match of the weekend, UH and LBSU (2-4) battled it out all the way to the end.  The teams split the first two points of the match with Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner falling for just the second time in 10 matches this year with a straight set loss to Sydney Stevens and Julia Westby. UH, however, responded right away. Sofia Russo and Lea Kruse were inserted in the lineup for the first time all weekend and made good with a 21-15, 23-21 win over Emily Mattoon and Megan Widener at the No. 4 court.

LBSU won the No. 3 court and UH countered with a win on Court No. 5. It all came down to the top of the order as Glagau and Van Sickle locked horns with Christine Deroos and Mariana Molina for a three-set battle. UH won the first set  23-21, before LBSU came back to win the second set. In the third and decisive set, Glagau and Van Sickle left little doubt, racing away for a 15-5 to secure the dual and a perfect weekend for the 'Bows.

LBSU blanked Cal Poly, 5-0 in the other match of the day.

The Rainbow Wahine now return home to host the Heineken Queen's Cup March 10-12 at Queen's Beach. Joining UH in the three-day tourney is Cal, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
