BeachBows Sweep On Opening Day of the Best In the West Tourney

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — The No. 9 University of Hawaii beach volleyball had a solid opening day at the Best in the West tournament Saturday in overcast and chilly conditions in Laguna Beach. The Rainbow Wahine beat Big West rivals Cal Poly and Long Beach State by identical 3-2 scores.

In the first match of the day, UH got by rival Cal Poly (0-6). UH entered the match have lost four of its last five matches against the Mustangs, including a pair of losses in last year's Big West Tournament. UH avenged those losses by picking up straight set wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 courts. Both of UH's losses at the top of the order game in three-sets.. Anna Maidment and Jaime Santer made their debut pairing at the top of the order falling to Piper Ferch and Izzy Martinez, 19-21, 21-10, 15-12.

In the second match of the day, UH picked its fifth straight win over Long Beach State (1-3). LBSU's first point came from former BeachBow Megan Widener who teamed up with Emily Mattoon to defeat Sophie Buschmann and Ilihia Huddleston in straight sets at the No. 4 court. The 'Bows started picking up the pace with Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau sweeping the No. 1 court handing UH their first point of the dual. The nail biting began on courts 3 and 5, each forcing a third set. Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller came out on top against Natalie Glenn and Maggie Walters taking set 3, 15-12 and giving the Bows their second point to tie the dual 2-2. It all came down to the No. 3 court with Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner trading points in the third set, before racing ahead to capture the match and the dual with a 15-21, 21-16, 16-14.win over Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah.

LBSU narrowly defeated Cal Poly, 3-2 in the other match of the day.

The Best in the West tourney will continue Sunday with a rematch of today's matches. UH will face Cal Poly at 12:30 p.m. PT/10:30 am HT before wrapping up the weekend versus Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m. PT/ 1:00 pm HT.
