BeachBows Split On First Day Of East Meets West Invitational

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calf.  — In a gathering of elite collegiate teams, the No. 8 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the East Meets West Invitational Friday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Rainbow Wahine (21-5) fell to No. 3 Florida State, 4-1, before bouncing back against No. 11 Georgia State 4-1.

In the first match of the day, UH renewed its rivalry with Florida State as the teams met for the first time in four years. The teams last faced off in the 2019 East Meets West with the Seminoles edging UH. Once again FSU would get the best of UH in a match closer than the score indicated. UH took FSU the distance on three courts before conceding on each of them. The duo of Ilihia Huddleston and Jaime Santer lost for the first time in 14 matches together this year with a 19-21, 21-14, 15-10 setback to Caitlin Moon and Raelyn White at the No. 4 court. UH earned its one point at the top of the order where Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle defeated Maddie Anderson and Paige Kalkhoof 22-20, 21-15. The win was FSU's (22-2) 10th straight, while UH dropped back-to-back matches for just the second time this year.

The 'Bows bounced back in the afternoon with a 4-1 win over Georgia State (13-9). It was the first-ever meeting between the programs and the first of three this year as UH will host the Panthers in mid-April in Honolulu. UH, which won in straight sets on three of four courts,  started the match with wins by Kylin Loker-Riley Wagoner and Anna Maidment-Sofia Russo at the No. 2 and 4 courts, respectively. Huddleston and Santer responded from their first loss earlier in the day to pick up a straight-set win at the No. 3 flight to clinch the third and decisive point. The duo is now 14-1 on the season. Glagau and Van Sickle rounded out the action with a straight set win at No. 1 to improve to 2-0 on the day and 21-2 overall on the year.

UH will continue the two-day tournament on Saturday with matches versus No. 16 Florida International at 9 a.m. PT/6 a.m. HT and No. 5 LSU at 12:30 p.m. PT/9:30 am HT.
