Baseball Falls to Fullerton on Walk-Off

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team took an early lead but couldn't hang on as Cal State Fullerton walked it off in the ninth to beat the 'Bows, 7-6, in the series opener Friday night.

The Rainbow Warriors (12-9, 2-2 Big West) led 5-1 after four, but Fullerton scored five unanswered to jump in front. After UH tied it up in the seventh Jack Haley came up with two outs in the ninth and hit a double off the wall in center field to score the winning run from first base.

The 'Bows took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. After Ben Zeigler-Namoa singled and Dallas Duarte reached on an error to start the game, Jacob Igawa delivered a two-out, two-run double off the top of the wall in right center to make it 2-0.

Fullerton (13-8, 6-1 Big West) got on the board in the third inning, scoring a run on three straight base hits to start the frame. UH starter Harry Gustin was able to limit the damage there with the help of a fielder's choice before starting a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Hawai'i answered right back with three more two-out runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Duarte delivered the first run with an RBI base knock to left field, scoring Tai Walton to make it 3-1. Matt Wong then drew a bases-loaded walk before the third run came in to score on an error by the Fullerton shortstop, giving UH a four-run lead.

The Titans responded by scoring the next five runs to take the lead, scoring a single run in the fifth and four in the sixth to make it 6-5. Hawai'i came right back to tie it up at six in the top of the seventh, as Jared Quandt led off the inning with a single and scored on a Jordan Donahue RBI groundout.

Kyson Donahue extended his hitting streak to 13 games after going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. The junior third baseman is hitting .380 over that stretch and has also reached base in 16 straight games. Igawa turned in his fourth multi-RBI game of the season, while Wong extended his on-base streak to 10 games.

The two teams continue their weekend series Saturday at 2 p.m. HT. Randy Abshier (2-1, 3.12) is scheduled to start for the Rainbow Warriors while Trevor Hinkel (0-3, 7.98) is set to get the ball for the Titans.
