FULLERTON, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team out-slugged Cal State Fullerton to even up the series with a 14-10 win in a back-and-forth game Saturday that saw the two teams combine for 33 hits.
A total of six Rainbow Warriors turned in multi-hit games while four drove in multiple runs as the 'Bows pounded out a season-high 19 hits, seven of which were doubles. UH scored 12 runs from the fifth inning on, putting up crooked numbers in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings.
After the 'Bows and Titans went back-and-forth during the middle innings, UH exploded for five runs in the seventh inning. The first two runs of the frame came in to score on bases-loaded walks, as
Ben Zeigler-Namoa and
Matt Wong worked consecutive four-pitch walks to make it 9-6.
Kyson Donahue then ripped the first pitch he saw to right center to score two more before
Jacob Igawa capped off the scoring with an RBI single, making it 12-6.
Fullerton (13-9, 6-2 Big West) got two back in the bottom of the seventh, but UH added two more in the ninth when Igawa scored on a
Dallas Duarte squeeze bunt and Naighel Ali'I Calderon delivered an RBI double to score
Aaron Ujimori. The Titans threatened again in the ninth, scoring two runs to cut the UH lead to four, but
Harrison Bodendorf beared down to get the final out and preserve the win.
The Titans got the scoring started, scoring three runs on three hits with the help of a UH error in the first to make it 3-0. After a scoreless second, the 'Bows answered with a pair of runs in the third to cut the deficit to one.
Zeigler-Namoa put Hawai'I (13-9, 3-2 Big West) on the board with a one-out double to score
Jordan Donahue from first, before Wong followed one batter later with a base hit up the middle to plate Zeigler-Namoa and cut the Fullerton lead to 3-2.
Fullerton added a run with a solo homer in the fourth, but UH came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
Bronson Rivera delivered the first run of the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single before Duarte tied it up with a single to left field. The 'Bows took the lead when Duarte got caught between first and second, but an errant throw to second base by Titans first baseman Caden Connor allowed Rivera to score from third, making it 5-4 UH.
The two teams continued to go back-and-forth as the Titans re-claimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before Hawai'i jumped back in front with two more in the sixth. Wong continued his huge day with an RBI double to tie things up before
Kyson Donahue gave UH the lead with single to left on which Wong was thrown out at the plate but was awarded the run due to an obstruction call, making it 7-6.
Wong had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, three runs scored and two walks. He matched his career-high in hits, recording his second four-hit game of the season.
Kyson Donahue extended his hitting streak to 14 games, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is hitting .389 over that stretch.
Bodendorf delivered a gutsy effort out of the bullpen to pick up the win, tossing the final five innings with seven strikeouts while giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits. He set career-highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts while throwing a season-high 99 pitches.
The Rainbow Warriors will look to secure a series win in the finale against the Titans Sunday at 10 a.m. HT.
