Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Mantellato Dias’ Seven-Goal Night Powers UH Over UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif.  -- The No. 4 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team kicked off a three-match road trip with a 12-10 win over No. 18 UC San Diego Thursday night at the Canyonview Aquatic Center. With the win the Rainbow Wahine improved to 17-3 overall and took sole possession of first place in the Big West with a 4-0 mark.

Bia Mantellato Dias, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, continued her torrid pace with a career-high seven goals against the Tritons (9-16, 1-3). The seven goals were the most by a Rainbow Wahine in a decade, matching the seven scored by Amarens Genee versus Colorado State in 2013. The freshman, who tallied four goals in the first quarter alone, has now recorded a hat trick in each of the last five matches.

Lot Stertefeld (2), Lucia Gomez de la Puente, Emma van Rossum, Jordan Wedderburn also found the back of the net for the 'Bows who have now won four straight and eight of their last nine matches.

A month after defeating UCSD, 17-7, in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, UH had much stiffer competition in the Triton's home waters. Yet UH  never trailed in the match and built a five-goal lead early in the fourth quarter, before winning by two. The Rainbow Wahine have defeated the Tritons five straight times and in 12 of the last 13 meetings. The win also inched UH head coach Maureen Cole one win away from 200 in her career.

The Rainbow Wahine will be back in the pool for its second conference road match in as many days when it takes on Cal State Fullerton in the first-ever meeting between the squads on Friday, March 31. First sprint is 7 p.m./4 p.m. HT at the Titan Aquatics Center.
