BeachBows Win Streak Comes To A Close At UCLA

LOS ANGELES  — The No. 8 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team saw its 18-match win streak come to a halt with a 4-1 loss to No. 2 UCLA Wednesday at Mapes Beach on the campus of the Bruins. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 20-4 on the season while suffering its first setback in more than a month.

The rested Bruins (19-1), who returned to action for the first time in more than a week, extended their win streak to 10 matches after beating UH for the second time this season. Coupled with a 4-1 win in late February, UCLA has now beaten the BeachBows 11 straight times dating back to 2018.

UH's highlight of the day came in the form of Ilihia Huddleston and Jaime Santer. Moving up to the No. 3 flight for the first time this year, the duo earned UH's lone point by sweeping past Sophie Moore and Tessa Van Winkle 21-16, 21-17.  Huddleston and Santer remained unblemished at 13-0 this season and have not dropped a single set when paired together. In the process, they also handed the Bruin pair of Moore and Van WInkle its first loss in 10 matches this year.

Unfortunately for UH the rest of the order didn't fare well. The 'Bows dropped the remaining four courts in straight sets. The No. 1 pair of Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle saw their 16-match win streak stopped with a 21-10, 21-12 loss to Peri Brennan and Abby Van Winkle. The duo still hold a sparkling 19-2 record this year. Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller also suffered a rare loss at the No. 5 flight after falling to Jaden Whitmarsh and Marlie Monserez 21-12, 21-15. The setback put them at 14-2 on the season.

The BeachBows will next head south to Manhattan Beach for the East Meets West Invitational, March 31-April 1. UH will take on No. 3 Florida State and No. 11 Georgia State on Friday, before facing No. 16 Florida International and No. 5 LSU on Saturday. Live scoring will be available for all four matches, while UH's matches versus Georgia State and LSU will be streamed.
