LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team posted its best single-round score in nearly a decade on the first day of the UC San Diego Invitational, Monday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
The Rainbow Warriors carded a 9-under 279 in Round 1 before following up with a 2-under 286 for a 11-under 565 total. UH is tied for eighth place in the 15-team field. Oklahoma Christian, the No. 3-ranked team in Division II, is atop the leaderboard at 556.
UH's 279 was the lowest since the 2013-14 season when the Warriors totaled a school-record 14-under 274 at the Aloha @ Hawai'i Invitational.
Blaze Akana is five strokes off the lead and tied for fourth place at 8-under 136. The sophomore opened with a 6-under 66 in Round 1 which began with an eagle and later went 5-under during a six hole stretch. The Sacramento State transfer posted three birdies and one bogey in Round 2.
CSUN's Eirik Thomassen has the clubhouse lead at 13-under 131 followed by UC San Diego's Kyle Dougherty and Cal Baptist's Eeli Kujanpaa, who are four strokes back at 9-under 135.
Tyler Ogawa is tied for 18
th place at 4-under 140 after consecutive rounds of 2-under 70. Also competing for the Warriors are
Atsuya Oishi (143; t-31
st), Reminton Hirano (146; t-57
th), and
Josh Hayashida (148; t-71
st).
The third and final round of competition is scheduled for Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. PT shotgun start.
