Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Water Polo Triumphs Over Cal in Double-Overtime Win, 9-8

HONOLULU- The No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated No.3 Cal, 9-8 in a double-overtime win at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex Saturday night.

UH goalkeeper Bridget Layburn scored the game-winning goal as time expired in the second overtime to cap  an incredible sequence of events to end the match. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine (16-3) avenged an 11-10 overtime loss to Cal (15-5) earlier this season.

The Golden Bears netted the first goal of the night, keeping a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Freshman Bia Mantellato Dias and senior Alba Bonamusa Boix led UH in scoring, minimizing the margin to 4-3 before halftime.

Action started to heat up in the third quarter, as the scoreboard remained unchanged in the first four minutes of play. At 2:54, junior Jordan Wedderburn brought a convincing wind-up, only to pass to center Mantellato Dias, who dented the twine to tie the score 4-4. Both teams countered each other's goals, until Cal closed the quarter at 6-5.

Bonamusa Boix sprinted ahead after a turnover in the fourth quarter and sent a swift skip shot past Cal defenders with 4:43 on the game clock, tying the match at 6-6. Wedderburn netted a goal of her own shortly afterward, which edged UH in the lead at 7-6.  Cal's Mallory Reynoso countered on the powerplay at 3:22, leveling the score once again.

Hawai'i was unable to find the back of the net in the first extra period. Meanwhile, Cal's Shea Salvino set Cal back in the lead at 8-7. In the second extra period, the game seemed to be in favor for Cal.  With only 0:05 on the clock in the second extra period, Mantellato Dias fired an over 10-meter shot to tally UH at 8-8, forcing a second overtime.

Heading into sudden death, both squads took two consecutive shots each. With less than 10 seconds on the clock, Layburn denied Cal's final shot at the UH net. With time ticking down, Layburn launched the ball across the pool toward a vacated Cal goal as the Bears elected to surge all seven players ahead for its final attempt. The ball landed in Cal's net at the buzzer, securing a 9-8 win for the 'Bows.

Hawai'i, winners of seven of its last eight matches,  will now head out on the road to face UC San Diego on Thursday, March 30  and Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 31.
