BeachBows Extend Win Streak To 12 With Pair Of Wins

HONOLULU — In its first on-campus matches of the season, the No. 9 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team breezed past both Nebraska and Texas by identical 5-0 scores Tuesday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The BeachBows (14-3) have now won 12 straight matches for its third-longest win streak in program history.

After opening the Heinken Queen's Cup with both the Huskers and Longhorns five days ago, the teams ran it back with the same results. UH improved to a perfect 15-0 all-time against the Huskers (9-5), while defeating a fledgling Texas program (0-6) that's just six matches into the college beach volleyball scene.

In the first match of the day versus the Huskers, the BeachBows took care of business with straight set wins on four of five courts. The lone court that went to three sets was the No. 3 flight. The pair of Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo dropped the first set to Merit Beason and Harper Murray 21-17. But the veteran duo left little doubt in the next two sets taking the point with final scores of 21-15 and 15-7 in sets two and three. It was the 44th all-time win for the duo who improved to 4-0 this year as a pair.

In the second match, UH took on Texas under the lights at Ching. The 'Bows won four of five courts in straight sets to earn its second win over the Longhorns in less than a week. Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller set the tone with the first point of the match at the No. 5 flight, sweeping past Jordyn Byrd and Ella Swindle 21-13, 21-16. The duo improved to a stellar 9-1 as a pair this season.

After taking flights No. 2 and 3, the evening was capped with a match-up at the top of the order with Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau taking on local products Keonilei Akana and Devin Kahahawai of Texas. Van Sickle and Glagau proved too much as the pair took home a 21-16, 21-9 victory. It was the 10th win in a row for the pair, who improved to 13-1 on the year.

The BeachBows will next head to the mainland where they will 11 matches over the course of eight days. The trip begins with the Big West Challenge, March 25-26, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
