HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team dropped its series finale to UConn, 9-2, Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium as the Huskies used a six-run third inning to break things open.
The Rainbow Warriors (7-7) led by a run after two innings, but UConn's bats came alive in the third inning while four Husky pitchers combined to hold UH to two runs on six hits.
UConn (9-4) got the scoring started in the top of the second, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0, but UH answered right back with two runs in the bottom half to go in front.
Stone Miyao drove in the first run on an RBI groundout after two base hits and an error to start the inning, before
Dallas Duarte made it 2-1 with a two-out base hit to left field.
The Huskies reclaimed the lead and broke things open in the third, scoring six runs on seven hits to make it 7-2. Six straight UConn batters reached to start the inning with three of them doubling to make it 5-2. Another run came in a double play ball while they capped off the scoring with a two-out single.
Another run came across in the fourth while the Huskies added another on an error in the seventh to round out the scoring.
A pair of Rainbow Warrior pitchers delivered strong outings in relief, as
Zach Losey worked two shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts while
Tyler Dyball finished the game throwing two hitless frames with two punch-outs.
Connor Harrison also worked a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one.
The Rainbow Warriors will open Big West play on the road with a three-game series at Cal Poly beginning Friday at 3 p.m. HT.
