SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team opened Big West play with a 1-0 win in 10 innings at Cal Poly Friday, scoring the game's lone run on a costly Mustang error in the top of the 10th.
After two quick outs to start the 10th,
Jared Quandt drew a walk to bring up
Jacob Igawa, who hit a fairly deep fly ball that the Cal Poly right fielder dropped near the warning track. Quandt hustled to score all the way from first on the misplay to put UH in front 1-0.
The Rainbow Warriors (8-7, 1-0 Big West) then turned the ball over to
Connor Harrison in the bottom of the 10th, and the Hawai'i closer finished it off with a couple of strikeouts to work around a one-out walk.
Harry Gustin and
Alex Giroux combined to shut down the Mustangs over nine innings before giving way to Harrison in the 10th. Gustin turned in his best outing of the year, working a career-long 5.2 innings while matching a career-high with six strikeouts while walking just one. Giroux worked the next 3.1 innings, holding Cal Poly (3-12, 0-1 Big West) to just two hits while striking out three over that stretch to earn his third win of the year.
Offensively, Hawai'i had a handful of scoring chances over the first nine innings but couldn't cash in. The 'Bows managed just five hits off Cal Poly starter Bryce Warrecker over seven innings before leaving the bases loaded in the eighth.
Giroux improved to 3-0 on the year while lowering his ERA to 1.02 and his conference-leading WHIP to 0.74. He also leads the league in opponent batting average, now at .133 on the season. Harrison recorded his third save of the season and has not allowed an earned run in his last five outings.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday in San Luis Obispo, the 'Bows and Mustangs will now play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 10 a.m. HT.
