BeachBows Open Heineken Queen's Cup With Pair Of Sweeps

HONOLULU — The No. 9 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team kicked off the Heineken Queen's Cup with a pair of dominating wins Friday at Queen's Beach. The BeachBows (9-3) tore through Big 12 foes Texas and Nebraska with a pair of sweeps to extend their dual match win streak to seven matches. 

After playing in chilly and overcast conditions in Southern California, the Rainbows returned to the beautiful conditions of Waikiki to face foes both familiar and new in its second home tournament of the young season.  

In the first dual of the day, UH swept Texas (0-1) in straight sets,handing the first-year program a loss in its collegiate debut in the sport.Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle flew past Longhorns Molly Phillips and Marina Crownover, picking up the first point of the dual 21-18 and 21-8. Shortly following were courts 3, 5, 4, and 2, who started off slow but picked up the pace to secure their wins. Jaime Santer and Ilihia Huddleston made their debut pairing on the No. 4 court, and proved to be a powerhouse taking down Bella Bergmark and Reilly Heinrich 21-15 and 21-11. 

In the second match of the day, UH and Nebraska squared off for the 14th time ever and the 'Bow's remained unblemished all-time against the Huskers. Big West Pair of the Week No. 5 pair Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller remained flawless and continued their winning ways against Andi Jackson and Masie Boesiger 21-12 and 21-10. Courts 2 and 3 extended their matches to three sets, ultimately securing the wins against the Huskers. Riley Wagoner and Kylin Loker pulled the reverse sweep to outlast Harper Murray and Merritt Beason 17-21, 21-14, 15-7.

The Heineken Queens Cup tourney resumes on Saturday morning, with the Rainbow Wahine slated to begin play at 10:15 a.m. against Oregon. The 'Bows will wrap up the day against No. 14 Washington at 2:00 p.m. HT. The three-day tournament will conclude on Sunday.
