HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball (8-6) split their doubleheader on Day 2 of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational. Seattle U (11-3) shutout the Rainbow Wahine, 8-0 in six innings to start the day, but bounced back to defeat Marist (3-6), 8-2 in the last game on Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Seattle U 8, Hawai'i 0 (6 innings)
Hawai'i could not find an answer to Seattle U starter Stefanie Madrigal. Madrigal earned the complete game win to improve to 7-1 with a three-hit shutout. She had no strikeouts and two walks and faced just 22 batters. Between the first through fourth innings she retired 10-straight batters.
In the top of the fourth, Seattle U scored a pair of runs to break the scoreless game. Jocelyn De La Cruz hit a solo homer to center. Later, the Red Hawks got an RBI-single by Sydney Frankenberger that drove in Ava Sin from third for the 2-0 lead.
With runners on second and third, De La Cruz struck again with an RBI-single up the middle in the fifth. On the play, the throw from center sailed past third which allowed the second runner to cross the plate. Sin then hit a single to drive in De La Cruz for the 5-0 lead.
A walk with two on and a throwing error in the sixth allowed Milder to score and Kahwaty followed with an RBI-single up the middle to drive in two to pad SU's lead to 8-0.
Hawai'i's starting pitcher, Key-Annah Campbell-Pua (3-2) suffered the loss allowing five runs on six hits in 4-2/3 innings of work. Reliever
Chloe Borges was able to throw one inning, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Malia Williams faced just one batter to end the game.
Hawai'i 8, Marist 2
Hawai'i battled back to rebound after a rough first game to defeat Marist to even their record against the Red Hawks in the tourney at 1-1.
UH posted a pair of runs to start the game. Both Xiao Gin and
Maya Nakamura reached base on walks and
Izabella Martinez drilled a double to the left-center gap to drive in both Gin and Nakamura for the early 2-0 lead.
Marist loaded the bases with no outs to start the fourth. The first run was forced home on a walk. But UH pitcher Millie Fidge then settled down to get a strikeout, a line out to short and another strikeout to snuff out the rally and end the inning escaping further damage.
In the fifth, Martinez was clutch again coming thru with an RBI-single to center that scored both Gin and Nakamura togethe for the second time of the game. Later with two outs,
Mya'Liah Bethea looped a single to right-centerfield to drive in pinch-runner
Piper Neri from second.
Marist got a run back in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Peyton Pusey that scored Isabella Manory.
The 'Bows added two more runs in the sixth. Nakamura came up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grounder to short that resulted in an error that forced
Cira Bartolotti home from third. Later with the bases still loaded,
Haley Johnson laced a single up the middle to drive in both
Ka'ena Keliinoi and Gin for an 8-2 lead going into the final frame.
UH starter Millie Fidge earned the complete game, 7.0 inning win in her longest appearance of the season. She evened her record at 1-1. She allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and a career-high seven strikeouts.
Marist's Meghan Haff (0-2) suffered the loss, throwing 4-2/3-innings giving up five runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Kiley Myers tossed the final 1-1/3-innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
UH's Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double and tied her career-high with four RBI. Gin also went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored three runs for the fourth time this season tying her UH career-high. Nakamura was 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and two walks. Johnson recorded her team-leading sixth multiple-RBI game, driving in two runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Hawai'i concludes the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on Sunday. UH will face St. Bonaventure at 4:00 p.m. to end a slate of three games.
